Matlosana Mall, Klerksdorp, SA.

Introduction to the project – SVA Architects

  • The total length of the Mall is about 700 meters with 5 entrances. The predominant access is to the Piazza further emphasized by an iconic feature described as the “basket” which acts as a focal land mark for the centre. The ’basket’ is constructed entirely out of Rhino Wood 140mm boards that clad the intricate steel substructure with a span of over two meters.

  • Project requirement

  • Due to the size and design of the mall profile, maintenance was a key concern for the client as accessibility due to the height of the structure is limited. The 140mm cladding boards were the perfect solution as they do not require maintenance, and would form a grey patina, giving the structure a naturally-aged look. The timeframe for the project was rigid and contractors were put to task meeting tight construction deadlines. As the timber was needed for a variety of cladding looks it needed to have a consistent quality and appearance.

  • Delivery

  • The specifications and lengths required for the project were peculiar, this normally causes excessive wastage, however Rhino Wood were able to supply exact dimensions reducing the waste to nothing. This was a remarkable achievement as the requirements changed a few times throughout the project lifecycle. As Rhino Wood is locally based they were able to remain flexible and deliver on the customer’s demands.

  • Feedback

  • Feedback from the contractors suggests they were very happy with the timely delivery and ease of fixing. Their costing forecasts were also accurate as there was very little waste.
